Anti Culture – Clothing for
the Non-Conformist
“Anti Culture is for the “Non-Conformist.” The person that is unhappy with the “status quo” and desires to make a change. However, make no mistake, Anti Culture is not for the person that seeks to be “different” for the sake of being different. It’s for those that are not afraid to be different when being “different” or rejecting “normal “will lead to the betterment of individuals and society.
Why reject culture? “Culture” has been the root for many injustices across the globe. By definition, culture is a way of life that is passed down from generation to generation to guide beliefs and to shape how people live. While culture can be good as it helps us pass along the positive from our past, it can also be harmful as it ingratiates the negativity from our past. In the Jim Crow Era of the American 1960s, “culture” rooted in the belief that black and brown people were inferior as the basis used to try and keep black and brown people from actualizing their civil rights. In the same vein, cultural beliefs about a woman’s place in society has been an undertone in preventing women from reaching parity with their male counterparts. Still today, the notion of culture is used to justify inhumane acts that either lead to acts or politics that violate the rights of individuals.
So where does clothing come into play? Clothing is a form of expression. What an individual puts on their body conveys a lot about their mood, what they believe in, and more importantly who they are as a person. Anti Culture desires to be that brand…that form of expression for those who are brave enough to push back on those societal norms that are infringing on individual rights, keeping people divided and stifling progression
